Student Progressive Action Network
Between January 23rd and 27th, the Student Progressive Action Network (SPAN) is asking you to vote for a new lease on life for the UBC Student Legal Fund Society. For the past few years, this important resource has gone under-utilized and under-prioritized, even as students’ day-to-day lives are increasingly impacted by the law, and as the law becomes an area with greater potential to be an arena of activism and advocacy by students for students. We want to make sure that students have all the tools they need, including the legal system, at their disposal when they deal with university life, employment, housing, and other realities faced by students.
If elected, we will:
1. Streamline the SLFS’ funding application process for greater accountability and transparency, particularly encouraging students to apply to support victims of violence and address family law concerns.
2. Provide funding for students who wish to dispute a grade.
3. We will fund Freedom of Information Requests from students for their records under the PRIME BC program, a database that can ruin students’ employment and volunteer prospects for having any contact with the police, good or bad, or for even reporting a crime.
